Wichita's US Open Cup debut is cut short with a 1-2 loss to Des Moines. A cautious first 45 minutes by both sides saw a few chances, but neither team was able to break the deadlock. Wichita came into the second half hungry. In the first minute, Luke Hitchman takes possession near the center circle and sends Max Touloute long who beats his man to the endline. Touloute crosses right in front of the goalmouth which finds Carlos Contreras who taps in to score the city's first US Open Cup goal in history and put the home side up 1-0. Wichita was pegged back just 11 minutes later as Des Moines took a quick throw in from half field and two touches later Heath Preston charged into the left side of the box to slot past Hamersky and equalize. With both sides getting on the board, the second half saw more attacking play and several missed opportunities. Down to just 5 minutes of regulation and extra-time looming, Des Moines pounced off of a big clearance from the keeper that was flicked on to a sprinting Veidman. Hamersky came off his line but was unable to get in front of the go-ahead goal. Wichita threw everything forward, but was unable to keep their Cup hopes alive as time expired. The Des Moines Menace advance and continue their strong record in the Cup.
