Thomas Wells and Nelson Landaverde both scored two goals en route to FC Wichita beating Club Atletico Saint Louis 5-0 on Sunday night.

FC Wichita vaulted their way into second place within the Heartland Conference. They are alone with 11 points. Demize NPSL and Little Rock Rangers both have 10 points.

For the first time this season, it looked like they were having fun. Aggressive play and tenacious defense led to counters on multiple opportunities. FC Wichita looked like the defending conference champion.

“We talked about it last week,” Head coach Bryan Perez said. “Stick to the game plan. Play our game and the results will come.”

It didn’t take long before Thomas Wells took a misplay by the keeper, brought it into the middle and put it in the upper part of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

The crack in the dam grew bigger. FC Wichita turned up the pressure. They put CASTL on their heels and the results started to come. In the 30th minute, Nelson Landaverde scored his first of two goals after St. Louis was called for a handball in the box. Nelson tricked the keeper, sending him the opposite way and FC Wichita was rolling, up 2-0.

Shortly before the half, Landaverde would get his brace, sending a ball into the where the owl sleeps, as Johnny Freedom would say. FC Wichita took a commanding 3-0 lead into the break.

Thomas Wells would get his brace midway through the second half, after a misplay by the back up St. Louis keeper, Wells took the ball and politely placed into the net for the 4-0 lead. A beautiful placement by Landaverde to Wells helped. The keeper missed played it. Wells, who can score whenever he wants, made him pay.

With the match in hand, FC Wichita made numerous substitutes, including bringing in Lucas Cordeiro. In his first match since December 2016, Cordeiro is a towering presence. Cordeiro took a free kick in the 84th minute, placing it in the upper left corner to make it 5-0.

It’s FC Wichita’s largest victory since beating Ozark FC 5-0 last season on May 5. It’s the first time FC Wichita has scored first this season. FC Wichita still only has one loss this season.

The three points capped off the Wheat State Insurance and Harbor House fundraiser. FC Wichita auctioned off the purple kits, with all proceeds going to Harbor House. All together, everyone raised around $2,000.

FC Wichita will turn their attention to the Little Rock Rangers. FC Wichita hasn’t won in Little Rock in two seasons. Their last games have been 1-0 defeats. That match is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. on July 29 at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas.
