WICHITA — Opening on the road is never fun. For FC Wichita, that’s what will happen on Saturday. The Boys in Red travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday, May 11 to play Tulsa Athletic in the first match of the Heartland Conference.
“I have a special bond with the Tulsa fans but it’s the first match so we want to train a little hard to get the first three points,” goalkeeper Mark Weir said. “Obviously, it’s our rival, but we train like any other game.”
FC Wichita’s only loss came on the road last season to Saint Louis Club Athletico.
“It’ll be tough like any away game,” Weir said. If we pick up six points we’ll be in good position to start the season.”
Consistency is key for FC Wichita. The entire back line returns from the best defense in the Heartland Conference. Weir and the boys only conceded 11 goals through their 10 matches. That includes three shutouts.
“It helps when everybody is there. You know how can you play, Weir said. “The chemistry and momentum is already there.”
With more players arriving for training the goal remains the same for returning and new players.
“We got close last year. Forward Thomas Wells said. “We didn’t end how we wanted, we are hoping to improve upon that.”
FC Wichita travels to Tulsa on Saturday for their season opener against the Athletic. They’ll travel to Saint Louis in a revenge match the following week.
