WICHITA — The drizzle turned into a little rain and back to a drizzle, two things were a constant: 1) it would never stop precipitating 2) A lot of good football was played.
FC Wichita held their first annual Blue v. Red scrimmage at the newly renovated Stryker Soccer Complex on Wednesday, May 1 and there were a lot of good things that came out of the scrimmage.
“It’s an honor to coach the youth team and help build them up,” FC Wichita coach Gonzalo Carranza said. “We really were able to identify some players who are going to make our men’s team better.”
It was a mix of returning senior club players, like the always reliable Mark Weir to the defensive back line of Jared Robbins. There were some nice returning faces from prior men’s teams like Leo Catarina. The scrimmage saw multiple academy member such as Hassan Alamood, who scored match’s only goal, to Kevin Black, who assisted Alamood.
“This was an opportunity to get to see some of the players who are actively trying out for our club,” Blake Shumaker said. “FC Wichita is always on the hunt for Wichita’s best and brightest players.”
Alamood struck goal in the 41st minute for the red squad.
The outcome was never the real endgame for the match, the evaluation and the completion of the final men’s roster is first and foremost. FC Wichita’s rich, but young, history is lined with successful seasons and 2019 is expected to be up there with the best of them.
FC Wichita begins their 2019 regular season schedule on May 11 in Tulsa, Oklahoma against their arch rivals, Tulsa Athletic. Match is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m. at Veteran’s Park.
FC Wichita is the reigning regular season Heartland Champions. They’ve won four straight matches against the Athletic.
The Boys in Red return for their home opener at Stryker Stadium on May 25, also against Tulsa Athletic. That is a scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff.
