FC Wichita drew with Demize NPSL, but it was still enough to win the regular season table.
FC Wichita has now won both regular season titles in the only two Heartland Conference seasons. They’ll host Saint Louis Club Atletico in the first round of the Heartland Playoffs.
After a scoreless first half, it was the captain, Leo Sosa who sent a screamer over the wall on a free kick and into the back of the net, giving FC Wichita the 1-0 lead in the 54th minute.
“This is incredible, third time in four years,” Sosa said. “We’ve been working a lot harder and did it with the heat, did it with injuries, with guys having to travel a lot, and losing guys to professional teams. It makes it even more special.”
FC Wichita would hold onto the lead until the 73rd minute when Demize NPSL equalized. Mark Weir made a flying save but the backline was unable to clear out the garbage and the Demize slipped one in to equalize.
A slew of subs in the late minutes of the second half weren’t enough as the boys in blue kept attacking all night, shot after shot. However, it just wasn’t meant to be on a night where the regular season shield was clinched. The 1-1 draw would be the final tally.
With the draw, FC Wichita clinches the conference despite not getting a victory in their last three matches. FC Wichita though, will be the No. 1 seed in the Heartland Conference playoffs, which start on Wednesday night. You never want to back into the playoffs but FC Wichita saw the return of some familiar faces finally. Matt Clare and Thomas Wells made their returns to the line ups for the first time in weeks.
FC Wichita will host Saint Louis Club Atletico on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Academy Stadium. The winner will play in the Heartland Championship on Saturday, July 14.
