Matt Clare found the net twice and two of them were assisted by Leo Sosa as FC Wichita beat Saint Louis Club Atletico 4-0 to advance to the Heartland Conference Championship for the second straight season.
FC Wichita will now play Little Rock in the Heartland Championship.
There was something different than it’s been in the last month. The air of confidence wafted over Trinity Academy Stadium. It showed almost immediately. FC Wichita attacked from the start and went until the final whistle sounded.
The scoring hit pretty quick as Clare dropped off a little pass to Sosa who sent a streaker past the Saint Louis Keeper to go up 1-0.
FC Wichita completed over 400 passes and continued the onslaught. James Togbah continuously attacked down the wing and sending crosses into the box. Saint Louis keeper, Jack Robinson, lived on his heels, often uncomfortable and having to make tremendous stops to keep Saint Louis in the match.
Kieran Laking and Jared Robbins, the anchor of the left side of the backline came through big in two clearances midway through the first half. The ball found itself behind Mark Weir but it was Robbins and Laking both cleared out two balls in tremendous fashion, keeping FC Wichita up 1-0.
Nelson Landaverde sent a gorgeous through ball to Matt Clare, who just gently passed it behind Robinson, putting FC Wichita up 2-0 at the half.
Clare picked up his second goal in the 63rd minute on a pass from captain Sosa. A misplay by the defender to clear out a ball, fell on the feet of Clare, who found the back of the net for the 3-0 lead.
Sosa had another cross that flew through the penalty box and by the keeper, landing on the feet of Teylor Cubero for the 4-0 lead.
It’s the most goals FC Wichita has scored in the NPSL since May 5 against Ozark FC (5-0).
Mark Weir stopped six shots and won a few more challenges on top of that. It’s FC Wichita’s first clean sheet since June 16, a 2-0 win over Demize NPSL.
FC Wichita hadn’t won in almost a month, the Demize victory being their last before tonight.
Sosa, who only scored two goals the first six weeks of the season, has lit up the scoreboard over the last two matches. He’s scored two goals and handed out two assists. The man wearing the captain band has flexed his muscles and pushed FC Wichita into the Conference Championship.
FC Wichita will now play the Little Rock Rangers on Saturday, July 14 at 7:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the South Region semifinals on July 17.
