Frank Tayou scored back-to-back goals in a matter of minutes as FC Wichita beat expansion club Saint Louis Club Atletico 4-2 on Saturday night at Trinity Academy.

“We’ve only been together a couple of weeks,” Tayou said. “When you get good players together, they’ll figure out how to gel.”

Tayou’s first goal leveled the match with St. Louis at 2-each in the 21st minute on a penalty kick. Tayou was taken down by the keeper at the 18-yard line.

“One thing that got me interested when I signed here is the ability to win championships,” Tayou said. It not only comes from a good team but with character and personality. We showed that today.”

FC Wichita was without their captain, Leo Sosa, who sat with a hamstring injury. The rest of the club, stepped up.

“I said to Blake [Shumaker] when we got down 1-0, this is a good chance to see how we react,” FC wichita coach Gonzalo Carranza said. “The score in the end showed how we reacted.”

St. Louis’ Jevaughn Walsh started the scoring off by beating keeper Mark Weir in the third minute. A gorgeous pass from Teylor Cubero to Nelson Landaverde brought FC Wichita back to even in the 16th minutes.

Landaverde found Tayou at the middle of the box for the one-touch passed the Atletico keeper to give FC Wichita the lead in the 24th minute.

FC Wichita would never trail again.

Marian Saar’s goal in the 68th minute would cap the scoring, putting FC Wichita ahead 4-2.

The officiating would get suspect through the final 20 minutes of the match. There would be many yellow cards handed out to both sides as St. Louis tried to push up for their final advance.

“We’re not interested in winning just one game,” Tayou said. “We’re interested in winning championships.”

The boys in red will take a break from Heartland Conference play as they will head to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a US Open Cup showdown against the Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Wednesday, May 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. You’ll be able to watch the only official watch in Wichita at Jerseys Bar & Grill.

Then, FC Wichita hosts the Little Rock Rangers on Saturday, May 19 in a double header. The FC Women strike first against the ladies of Little Rock Rangers at 4 p.m. The men play at 7:30 p.m. You can buy tickets to both matches for only $15.

Man of the Match

Franck Tayou

Tayou’s push for a goal finally came through tonight against St. Louis.

Those moments have treated Tayou well over his career. Tayou was the Major Arena Soccer League MVP in 2016 and it was just a waiting game for the flood gates to open. Standing a towering 6-foot-2, his size is intimidating to opponents. Tayou’s two goals, including the go ahead in the 24th minute was the difference maker.

“I took step forward and they thought I was going to step up but I pulled back,” Tayou said. “By the time they realized what happened, the ball was in the back of the net.”

By the Numbers

There were six yellow cards handed out over the final 21 minutes of the match, three to each club.
