Thomas Wells netted two goals and Frank Tayou also added in one as FC Wichita took down rival Tulsa Athletic 3-1 at Trinity Stadium in the battle of the undefeated clubs on Saturday night.
With the win, FC Wichita gained three points, pushing their total to 12. They now own a three-point advantage over Tulsa and the head-to-head tie-breaker.
The two teams are set to play again in two weeks in Tulsa on June 10. That match is scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m.
A scoreless first half set the pace for an explosive second half. Tulsa’s Aaron Ugbah broke the seal, putting one past Mark Weir in the 49th minute.
FC Wichita didn’t trail for long as Thomas Wells hit a gorgeous bicycle kick in the 55th minute to equalize the match at 1-1. Wells had just checked in seconds early and made an immediate impact.
Just minutes later, Matt Clare dished it off to Frank Tayou, who stepped off the keeper, putting FC Wichita in front 2-1 in the 59th minute.
FC Wichita controlled the momentum and the pace. Tulsa, which struggled to defend the attacks from the boys in red. The attacks on the net kept coming and there wasn’t a lot Tulsa could do to stop it.
There weren’t many cards handed out, Kieren Laking picked up one in the first half and Damieon Thomas for Tulsa has picked up one for colliding with Weir in the second half.
In the 74th minute, Wells added the icing on the cake, chipping one over the Athletic keeper in spectacular fashion for his second goal fo the night. He now has three goals in NPSL play, four on the season in total.
Tulsa had a couple of chances as the officials added seven minutes of stoppage at the end but in the end, FC Wichita held onto their 3-1 advantage.
With the victory, FC Wichita has now won four straight over the Athletic. They improved to 4-1-0 all-time at home vs. Tulsa.
FC Wichita now goes on the road for five straight matches. They’ll start on June 2 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas against Ozark FC. FC Wichita already topped Ozark FC 5-0 in their season openers on May 5.
The boys are back in Wichita on July 7 against Demize NPSL.
