Tayou, a 6-3 defender, will be key in stabilizing the back line for FC Wichita this season.
Uzi Tayou enters his second season with the club, after arriving mid-season last year. Before his arrival the defense seemed to be struggling both with winning balls in the air, and containing the opposing teams target forward. At that time in the 2017 season, head coach Steve Ralos was searching for an option to minimize those mistakes, so he turned to Tayou and fellow teammate Boris Tonzi. The move paid dividends and Wichita went on to become Heartland Conference regular season and tournament champs.
“Uzi immediately came in and helped organize us last season. He easily passes the eye test because of his physical presence, but he also has a great understanding of the game,” CEO Blake Shumaker said. “Uzi gives you the desire and passion you need in your team. He always seems to set the tone by winning those difficult challenges in the air. What you can’t see on tape though is the communication, this his actually his greatest strength, he’s constantly relaying information through the back line and into our midfield.”
Tayou played college soccer at West Virginia University before transitioning into a career of indoor soccer.
Currently in season with Sonora, Uzi has also previously played for clubs such as the Baltimore Blast and the Las Vegas Legends. All of the experience recently prepared Uzi for a roster spot on the US Arena National Team, and a Mini-Futbol World Cup appearance in Indonesia.
“I’m delighted to be back for another season and ready to pick things up where we left off,” Tayou said. “I hope we exceed our past accomplishments and bring the City of Wichita, and the best fans in the NPSL what they deserve.”
