The FC Wichita Women look to make history against the Texas Spurs FC on Saturday. The elusive first victory is in their sights. With a full week of practices under their belt, the women have been focusing on the attacking side of their game.

For this newly formed team, the fan support has been incredible. A near capacity crowd helped the team in their first game; the club noticed the support.

“To play in your home city, this is an amazing opportunity,” Forward Katie McClure said. “The support I love it.”

For Wichita, this is their second game of the year dropping their inaugural match in a 1-0 contest against last year’s conference winner FC Dallas. In their first ever game the women proved a formidable force by holding the defending conference champions to one goal despite only practicing once before. A bright spot for the team was goalie Jami Reichenberger who made 11 saves in the defeat.

McClure also produced numerous attacking chances, most notably the shot that hit the crossbar before falling on the goal-line for the keeper to grab. The defense was immaculate against the star-studded FC Dallas front, coming up with big stops consistently.

“Offensive attacking part, getting our midfielders into the play and combining with the strikers with Whitney and I playing close together, trying to get everything all together,” McClure said.

The Texas Spurs FC started competing in the WPSL in 2015. That season they finished 8-5-2 with 26 table points, good enough for fourth in the Big Sky Conference. Last season, there was much improvement as they went 10-2-2 and collecting 32 points in the table. In their 14 matches last season, Texas Spurs FC only allowed 10 goals in conference.

Though, like in the NPSL, the WPSL means a new season and new expectations. Texas Spurs FC do not return any of their top 10 statistical players from last season. There could be a bit of a learning curve as this will be their first match of the season. Tryouts for Texas Spurs concluded less than a week ago.

For Saturday’s match, tickets are still available at the Stryker Soccer Complex ticket booth an hour before kickoff. Make sure you will be there when the FC Wichita women pull their first win in franchise history!
