Mauricio Vargas is on his way to the USL after signing his first professional contract with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on December 17, 2015. Vargas inspired FC Wichita players and fans during the clubs inaugural 2015 season starting every match while finishing with 6 clean sheets and only .79 average goals conceded per game.

On December 16, 2015 the Pittsburgh Riverhounds signed an affiliation agreement with Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew SC to become the Ohio club’s primary destination for loaned players during the 2016 United Soccer League season. Within 24 hours the Riverhounds had made their first move and signed FC Wichita goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas.

After the success of FC Wichitas  2015 NPSL season, the calls immediately started to roll in coveting its players. No one showed higher demand then goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas. Vargas saw interest from all professional levels of soccer in the states including the MLS runners up Columbus Crew SC. Columbus, FC Dallas, Sporting KC and DC United were among other professional clubs who realized Vargas could be on course to appear in the MLS. His potential did not go unnoticed inside the NPSL either. He was awarded an invitation to the 2016 NPSL Combine taking place January 8th, but with a deal completed prior Vargas will not appear at the combine which hosts all NASL and USL clubs who potentially look to sign those combine players. FC Wichita teammate Iyassu Bekele also received an invitation.

“This signing was no surprise to us, we knew exactly what Mau was the day we signed him. He always had the potential as a player and a person to become an MLS prospect, said FC Wichita CEO Blake Shumaker.  “It was our job to make sure he understood that and continued to develop. As for the club, we needed to help showcase him as the prospect he is. We have the upmost respect for Mau and everyone here is very excited to see him following his dreams.”
